Success

My youngest turns 17 tomorrow. And my oldest will turn 22 in 2012. I know what you’re saying. “You don’t look old enough to have children that old!” Actually that’s what people used to say but not so much anymore. With each passing year and especially around the New Year I always look at my life to see what changes I need to make and what has seemed to work. As I reflect this week I can’t help but think of family. Tammy and I will be married 22 years in February. Kelcey just started the Nuclear Medicine program at South College yesterday and Jordan is just about 18 months from starting college himself.

I never imagined being married 22 years. Before you jump to your, “wait till I tell Tammy” comment, if she were honest she would say the same. But now I can’t wait to be married to her the rest of my life. Marriage is the greatest covenant on the planet. Of course because it is supposed to reflect God’s relationship to the church but the details are the heartbeat of a great marriage. Knowing that Tammy’s favorite dessert is red velvet (although cheesecake is making a run). I know that her heart is so big for hurting people, especially old people and children, and if she had her dream job it would be holding babies. Any babies. Or loving on old people. Those are just a couple of things that cause me to love her more.

I never imagined raising two kids. Honestly, I never gave a thought to how I was going to raise them. I knew very little but I was certain of the little I knew. They would respect authority. Not just mine, but ALL authority. They would go to church. Not just on occasion but on every occasion as long as they live with me. They would know family. My family, Tammy’s family and of course their own family. And they would be loved. Tammy and I would be there for them. They knew standards were high in their house and just about all of the time they strive to live up to those standards.

Not sure if Tammy and my partnership will produce anything that other people would call great. But I am sure that we have a great marriage full of great love. And, by the way, those two crumb-snatchers that we created together; We think they are great also.

Happy birthday son. We love you and are so proud to be your parents. And Kelcey, you are pretty great yourself and we are just as proud of who you have become!
