B.S.
A quick update on the jury duty
thing… they said for me not to show up today but I can call later today and see
if I’m needed tomorrow. I was a little bummed last night but have recovered and
have already polished my two speeches just in case I am brought in tomorrow J
On
to bigger and better things. I’m not exactly what’s going on in my brain but I
have been stuck on the politics of the day and recent weeks. Today is no
different as I listen and read about our two presidential choices that we will
have in a few short months. I know who I’m voting for but I don’t know exactly
why. I hate the “vote for the lesser evil” choice but we only have two to
choose from. I heard someone say recently that they didn’t like either
candidate but they were choosing a cold over the flu. That sounds pretty
appropriate.
But
on today’s agenda is something very plain. Very simple. Something that we all
want in a candidate but we never demand it. We demand it from those closest to us.
We look for it in friends and people that we do business with but with politicians
we usually give them a pass. It is the basis of human relationships and trust
but yet very few Americans would say that it is something a candidate for
President possesses. I won’t speak for you but I have no respect for someone
who can’t display it every day in every situation.
It’s
called HONESTY. Just tell the truth. And I propose that the first time someone
is caught in an outright lie, they have to step aside. The first time! And none
of this playing loosely with the truth either. If I would call it a lie in my
children then it’s a lie. You are done my friend. NEXT! Every time we should do
this. If you make a promise that you don’t come through on. You resign! Period!
I don’t know about you but when I say I am going to do something, I try to make
that happen. If I know I can’t do it, I don’t say I can. If I promise to take my
wife out to dinner on Friday night and we don’t go. I don’t hide and avoid her
questions until I’m cornered like a rat. I explain what happened and then she
gets to call B.S. if she sees it. What if a president came out and said, “I’m
sorry that I didn’t promote _____________ like I said I would on the campaign
trail. I will take care of that in the next 2 weeks.” But there isn’t even
anyone who wants to talk about it.
Imagine
in the first debate if you heard a moderator say, “I’m sorry governor but I’m
gonna have to call B.S. on that last statement.” Or, “Mr. President, you cannot
claim anywhere close the gazillion jobs you promised on the campaign trail so
we’re gonna say that’s B.S.”
And
politics are the only arena that we allow this kind of, well, B.S. And it’s where
we have the power to change it. I can’t change the coaches at any college but
they choose not to lie about things because if they do, they lose their job. In
politics, you can lie before you get the job and we’ll hire you anyway.
Maybe
immediate resignation is a bit harsh but there has to be some repercussions.
Otherwise there is no adjustment in behavior. I first experienced that when I
was a toddler and I continue to learn that lesson as a 41 year old.
Some
people say that religion and politics don’t mix but those people and I usually
don’t agree on much so here’s you something to chew on. The bible says that, “You
will know the truth and the truth will make you free.” Isn’t the greatest
country in the world all about freedom? As you exercise your right and your
voice during this political season, measure your candidate with truth.
I
will try and stop writing about politics. I don’t like it anymore than you do
but it is frustrating that in the country where freedom rings for all, we are
becoming a nation that freedom rings truer for the wealthy, the loud, and the
offended.
